What is the significance of neck lumps?
Lumps in the neck refer to internal masses or abnormalities within the neck structure, including the thyroid gland situated at the front part of the neck. They may be associated with the following conditions:
- Thyroid Nodules: They refer to abnormal growths on the thyroid gland.
- Multinodular Goitre: This condition involves the enlargement of the thyroid gland with multiple nodules.
- Thyroid Cancer: Cancer is a potential concern when a lump is detected, as it may be malignant.
When should I see a doctor for lumps in the neck?
If you notice any lumps in the neck, it is advisable to see an Endocrinologist promptly, especially if:
- The lump persists for more than two weeks.
- It is painful or enlarges rapidly.
- You experience unexplained weight loss.
- There are accompanying symptoms like difficulty swallowing or voice changes.
Even though most thyroid nodules are benign (i.e. non-cancerous), there is still a possibility of some nodules being cancerous. It is advisable to consult your Endocrinologist for a thorough assessment to evaluate the nature of the nodule.
How can lumps in the neck be diagnosed?
In order to determine whether the lesions are malignant or benign, Endocrinologists may employ various methods, including:
- Detailed medical history taking: Your Endocrinologist will understand your current health issues and past medical history, which will guide further assessments and decisions.
- Physical examination: this includes inspecting the neck from the front and side to determine the lump’s location. The neck will also be examined for abnormal enlargement, contour, asymmetry, and masses, especially during repeated swallowing, by physically touching and feeling the lumps.
- Imaging tests: imaging tools like ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI also provide invaluable diagnostic information about the nature of the neck lumps.
- Biopsy: Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) involves using a thin needle to take a tiny tissue sample from the lump. The sample will be scrutinised under a microscope.
What are the treatment options for neck lumps in Singapore?
The underlying cause of the neck lumps determines the treatment plan. The treatment may include:
- Medication: For thyroid-related lumps, such as those caused by hyperthyroidism, anti-thyroid medications may be used to control hormone production and reduce the size of the neck lump.
- Radioactive Iodine Treatment: This treatment involves consuming radioactive iodine orally, which will be absorbed by the thyroid gland and can help shrink the nodule.
